Virgo 6. Talismans buried here and there along a road so that travelers will be protected.

Although the road was dark it seemed to them as if it were lit, for they could sense along the way, in the ground, things half remembered, forms they might feel and recognize.

Beyond the road’s edges lurked other things, whose occasional lights and strange callings beckoned them into the distance, sideways, away from the road. But they knew instinctively, to continue here, where the talismans glowed invisibly in the ground, and to remain undistracted by the needless investigations that lured them.

They flowed in the road like water in the banks of a river, even through lands of chaos and lost ways.
